Note on the Doorstep

The tension is unbearable. I'll break
Before the night is over, maybe soon,
As early as the rising of the moon
Above those buildings to the south. I shake,
And fret, and try to keep myself awake
Imagining an oversized balloon
Stretched past capacity. The afternoon
Was bad, but this is more than I can take.

Why did you do this to me? I demand
To know. I saw you walking on the street
Last week. Some day the two of us will meet.
The whole damn world feels like a rubber band
Around my head; it's more than I can stand,
And when I break, I'll break here at your feet.
