We Howl

One more inedible raw table scrap
And I am leaving. Even dogs have rights,
And mine have been abused. Turn on the lights,
Bring out the warfarin, empty the trap;
Dogs don't eat mice. We eat all kinds of crap,
But don't confuse yourself. We'll sniff at mites —
We'll sniff at anything, howl, get in fights,
And beg, but we're dogs even when we nap.

I'm saying nothing — nothing — about cats.
They're fellow creatures, and we do share space,
Sometimes they creep around, sometimes they race
Like idiots, and then they'll play with rats.
But dogs can act up, too, get into spats
And howl. You know, howling's our saving grace.
